Built by 100 German masons over 6 years, the 9,300 square foot Castle is constructed of local silica sandstone, painstakingly brought to the property by horse and wagon in the Gilded Age. The Castle has been modernized over the years while retaining its classic charm, including a lavish ballroom complete with two stone fireplaces and Grand Staircase. With a dungeon tucked into a secret passageway, griffins providing stony vigilance, steep topography maximizing natural defense, and a turreted rooftop with battlements and a spectacular view, the Castle hearkens back to European traditions.

A Call for Design Help: Giving the Castle a Look Worthy of Its History

A Call for Design Help: Giving the Castle a Look Worthy of Its History

Here at the Berkeley Springs Castle, we do a lot with a little. Our team is small, our budget is modest, and our passion for this place runs deep.

One of the things we've been quietly dreaming about is a refresh of our visual identity. The Castle has a remarkable story—Gilded Age ambition, rustic mountain setting, a Victorian character that doesn't fit neatly into any single box. We've never quite captured that in a logo.

We thought we had found the perfect match in a designer whose work we deeply admire. We reached out, shared our excitement about the project, and hoped for a collaboration. Sometimes, though, the timing isn't right. We haven't heard back, and we've decided it's time to cast a wider net.

So this is our invitation: if you are a graphic designer (or know one) who loves historic places, vintage typography, and the challenge of capturing something complex in a simple mark, we would love to hear from you.

What We're Looking For
We'd like to create a logo or brand identity that reflects the Castle's character—elegant but not fussy, historic but not stuffy. We've been inspired by the original branding of Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit, the Castle's builder, whose liquor labels had a wonderful Victorian quality. Think classic letterforms, thoughtful details, and a mark that feels both timeless and true to our place.

What We Can Offer
We are a volunteer-run nonprofit, so our budget is limited. But we value good design and want to compensate fairly for the right fit. This is also an opportunity to leave your mark on a historic landmark that thousands of visitors experience each year. Your work would live on tour tickets, merchandise, and event materials—seen and appreciated by people who care deeply about this place.

How to Respond
If this sounds like a project you'd be excited to explore, please email us at admin@berkeleyspringscastle.com with a link to your portfolio and a brief note about your interest. We'd love to learn more about you and your work.

Thank you for considering this small but meaningful piece of the Castle's story. We can't wait to see what might come of it.
