Built by 100 German masons over 6 years, the 9,300 square foot Castle is constructed of local silica sandstone, painstakingly brought to the property by horse and wagon in the Gilded Age. The Castle has been modernized over the years while retaining its classic charm, including a lavish ballroom complete with two stone fireplaces and Grand Staircase. With a dungeon tucked into a secret passageway, griffins providing stony vigilance, steep topography maximizing natural defense, and a turreted rooftop with battlements and a spectacular view, the Castle hearkens back to European traditions.

What It Takes to Open a New Room at the Castle

What It Takes to Open a New Room at the Castle
Cathie and Mindy getting up close and personal with the sheer curtains.

Big things are happening behind the scenes at the Berkeley Springs Castle! Our dedicated volunteer team has been hard at work preparing a brand-new suite of rooms for guests to enjoy, and we wanted to share a glimpse of their progress.

Recently, three of our tireless volunteers took on the monumental task of cleaning decades of history from the suite's grand drapes. Armed with ladders, an air compressor, and a steamer, they carefully brought the heavy curtains back to life. The sheer curtains, meanwhile, received a good old-fashioned soak in a tub—and the water turned a very telling shade of dark grey! It's safe to say these windows haven't seen this much attention in years.

Ewwwww. That's a lot of dust.

But the work doesn't stop there. Our to-do list includes:

  • Repairing ceiling plaster damaged by past leaks.
  • Fresh coats of paint to brighten the space.
  • Sourcing and placing beautiful Victorian-era furniture to complete the authentic look.

It's a labor of love, made possible entirely by the passion and elbow grease of our volunteers. Every curtain cleaned, every patch repaired, and every piece of furniture placed brings us one step closer to opening these historic rooms to you.

We can't wait to share the finished space. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue breathing new life into the Castle—one room at a time.
